Despite the fact this week's show sucked, I like the theme of "pick a song from the year you were born."

I liked it enough to look up whether Neil Young had released anything in 1979, not that I had anyone in mind or anything, and discovered he put out two albums that year: Rust Never Sleeps and Live Rust. And I've been humming "Like A Hurricane" ever since.

If I were clever about memes, I would create one. But I'm not, so I'm simply going to ask the question:

If you were on American Idol and the theme was "Sing a song from the year you were born," what song would you choose?

I found this dandy list and am delighted to see the top five for my birth year are:

1. To Sir With Love (Lulu)
2. Happy Together (The Turtles)
3. Windy (Association)
4. Ode To Billie Joe (Bobbie Gentry)
5. I'm A Believer (The Monkees)

I like all of them! I'm teetering between "Windy" (which I think I first heard on Sesame Street) and "Ode To Billie Joe" because I suspect that if I could sing I would be a folkie-country type singer.

Or maybe I would choose number 84: Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron (Royal Guardsmen), or number 33: Somebody To Love (Jefferson Airplane), or...

No. "Ode To Billie Joe" it is.

Anyone else?

So I had to Google "Songs from 1982" and I found a pretty decent list...

1. Physical, Olivia Newton-John
2. Eye Of The Tiger, Survivor
3. I Love Rock N' Roll, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
4. Ebony And Ivory, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder
5. Centerfold, J. Geils Band
6. Don't You Want Me, Human League
7. Jack And Diane, John Cougar
8. Hurts So Good, John Cougar
9. Abracadabra, Steve Miller Band
10. Hard To Say I'm Sorry, Chicago
91. Kids In America, Kim Wilde
92. Man On Your Mind, Little River Band
93. What's Forever For, Michael Murphy
94. Waiting On A Friend, Rolling Stones
95. Do I Do, Stevie Wonder
96. Working For The Weekend, Loverboy
97. Goin' Down, Greg Guidry

I have very fond memories of "Centerfold"--from grade nine. God I'm old!

I had to do it too!

I think I'd go for Downtown (Petula Clark) or Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter (Herman's Hermits - cause I love the accents). But there's always King of the Road...

Trailer for sale or rent, rooms to let for fifty cents... :)

I love "King Of the Road" too. I just realized, this game is even more fun if I then have to guess your birth year...

Let's just say "a long, long time ago" and leave it at that ;)

Hey, I confessed!

We just had the public areas in our library painted. Turned out the old paint was the same age as me!

Ah, but "King of the Road" sung with a Scottish accent... can't be beat!

Billboard Top 10 1970
Here's a link to the top ten in my year:

I like 3, 4 and 10. Did it have to be 5? I'm sure I'd pick a couple Black Sabbath songs to fill the list.

Re: Billboard Top 10 1970
You get to sing one song and it doesn't even have to be a hit from the year, as long as it was released in some format that year. (That's why "Like A Hurricane" counts for '79--it was on the live CD.) I just meant that the top 5 for '67 were all songs I'd like so my choice was pretty easy.

So you're welcome to choose Sabbath--and in fact that would have improved the show immensely!!

Please, no! Not "Ode to Billy Joe"! The movie totally ruined that song for me. I hated that movie with a passion way beyond my fifteen years of age when I saw it. *g*

Personally, I'd vote for Snoopy vs. the Red Baron. Loved that album! :)

The top five for me were:

1 "Runaround Sue"......................................Dion
2 "Quarter To Three"...................................Gary "U.S." Bonds
3 "Runaway"............................................Del Shannon
4 "Bristol Stomp"......................................The Dovells
5 "Blue Moon"..........................................The Marcels

But according to Billboard, the number one song the week I was born was "Tossin' and Turnin'" by Bobby Lewis. Hmm. Looks like every list I read has a different ranking. Weird.
