Crisis averted: last night wasn't exactly rainy, but we had some really high winds that led to scattered power outages all over town.
Including at Tribeca.
!!!
However, by eleven o'clock everything was fixed and the music went on. Beginning, once again, with our banjo-picking friends Skank Williams. I think we can all agree there are not enough banjos in the average Canadian's daily life.
Set List
You Ain't Woman Enough (Loretta Lynn)
Settin' the Woods on Fire (Hank Williams)
So Lonesome I could Cry (Hank Williams)
Will the Circle Be Unbroken (according to its Wikipedia entry it's by A. P. Carter from a hymn by Ada R. Habershon and Charles Gabriel; bassist on lead vocals with a lot of help from everyone on the chorus)
Fist City (Loretta Lynn--according to the band, "no one can write fighting songs like Loretta!" It's true: some months ago a writer on my friends-list was looking for a song to reference in a story, and she needed one in which the woman was mad rather than weepy. She got no suggestions until someone-who-may-have-been-me started offering Loretta songs. Seriously, do not mess with this tiny woman.)
Hey Good Lookin' (Hank Williams, guitarist: lead vocals)
I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You (Hank Williams--who despite credits such as this one is not Hank Williams Senior. He is the One True Hank Williams to which all other Hanks must be compared. They can be Junior or The Third. Hank Williams is Hank Williams. Thank you.)
Cocaine Blues/Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash)
Wagon Wheels (Old Crow Medicine Show)
By the end of the set Tribeca felt so much like a honky-tonk that I was a little surprised not to find a mechanical bull in the corner. The country music fans stuck around and had some drinks, and seemed most appreciative of the rest of the music the night had to offer. Gloryhound played two sets instead of three but managed to slide in at least one real surprise. The members I spoke to were still pretty stoked about the weekend, which may have had an influence on how things sounded. It was another very good night.
Set List
Set #1
Leave Me Where I Lie
pinch My Face
Ohio (CSNY)
Shape I'm In (The Band, Adam: vocals)
You Gotta Learn
Break the Dark (which went right into)
Long Arm (Adam: vocals)
Casey Jones (Grateful Dead)
Standing Still
Meet Me In the Morning (the country fans next to me at the bar were quite vocal in their appreciation by this time. Patrick, who was explaining who the band was and which songs were originals, looked really proud of them)
Break
Set #2
One I didn't recognize
Strung Up (which I don't think I've heard in months--probably as long as it's been since I heard "Stand Up To You")
Powderfinger (Neil Young)
Mountain Man
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (Adam: vocals & guitar, Evan: drums)
"...waiting for the rain to dry..."
Far Behind
Revolution Blues
Lust For Life (including a guest tambourine player I did not recognize)
License To Kill
So: back to our regular schedule, and we'll see what comes up next. I'm sure whatever it is will be interesting!
Including at Tribeca.
