The Shakespearean Insulter

The Shakespearean Insulter has been around for some time, in one form or another, but it just never gets old.

Mind you, I grew up in a household where if my dad wanted us to go away and leave him alone he would tell us to avaunt and quit his sight, so maybe I'm just sentimental.

This is one of my favourites, just because Dad liked it: "Go, prick thy face, and over-red thy fear, thou lily-liver'd boy."

Apparently nobody ever told him that it's bad luck to quote Macbeth.

I also like "The devil damn thee black, thou cream-faced loon! Where got'st thou that goose look?" I hope I'm remembering that one correctly. You'd think it would be hard to forget.

Go ahead, try it! Post your favourite insult!

When I was in Stratford upon Avon 8 years ago, I bought a book of Shakespearean insults and it was one of my favorite purchases from the trip! My friends would always take out the really funny insults from plays, and now I had a source where everything was categorized. I forget which play it's from, but my friends and I were fond of referring to people as "bull's pizzles" haha.

Just wondering what the context is for the second insult you quoted, the one with 'loon' in it? I'm not concerned about the loon part...

It's from Macbeth, when things begin to close in. In fact, the passage is right at the beginning of scene iii. The servant has come to tell him that English troops are on the move, and Macbeth is beginning to lose it.

My dad used to get quite animated!

hmmm, I guess I'm thinking about the cultural context. We'll have to discuss it next film night or something

Yeah, sorry. I don't think I understand the question.

No need to apologize, I'm trying to get my answer while deliberately keeping the question vague, lol.
