Okay, my time sense has always been ever-so-slightly suspect (and I can't tell time with a digital clock, but that's probably material for a completely different post) but that wasn't the reason I arrived something like halfway through Gloryhound's first set last night. My excuse in this case was, I was over at [info]latsyrk's place again, snuggling David Donald again (this is not the first such occurrence.) Compared to the last time I saw him (too long ago--being ouchy and self-centred should not preclude admiring new babies) he still weighs significantly less than Coney, but is a little bit sturdier. However, he can't hang on yet so I made sure I was sitting down the whole time I was holding him. Hey, I know my limitations.

So it was a little after eleven when I left [info]latsyrk's place (the family is on David Donald time so it wasn't as late as it should have been, if you follow) and started downtown.

Put on my windshield wipers to combat the snow that had started to fall. Big, wet, melty snowflakes. I was out of David Donald's hearing by this time so I expressed myself accordingly. And spared a sympathetic thought for Benson, one of the horses at the barn who was just body-clipped on the principle that he didn't need that big old winter haircoat anymore. Well, at least he has a blanket. And by the time I got downtown the snow had become rain anyway.

I sort of wished that I had one when I arrived at Tribeca: owing to a problem with a heating-oil tank somewhere else in the building all the fans were on and the bar area was cold enough that I missed my cat sweater. However, the fans kept the oily smell down, and after the day the paint thinner fumes got into the air circulation system at my workplace and several people had to go home with allergic reactions... eh, the cool breeze was really not so bad. And you could always keep your coat on. (Or, as in a few cases, awesome cardigans with ducks--I think it was ducks--knit into them. Hey, I have a sweater with nine cats on it. I notice such things.)

Set List
Set #1

  • "Sure don't feel the same"
  • You Gotta Learn
  • From A Buick 6 (Bob Dylan)
  • Shape I'm In (The Band, Adam: vocals)
  • Forever Young (Bob Dylan)

  • Break

During the break Evan mentioned that Gloryhound is organizing some dates around the Maritimes in support of the upcoming CD (the CD release party is at the Seahorse on Saturday, May 31st. That's the day after my big conference ends, so I may be too nuts that week to remind everyone of the CD release. So I plan to mention it as often as possible between now and then.) It also turns out they're playing in PEI this weekend supporting another band's CD release party. Details are in the link, if you're on the Island and interested. I've already contacted a couple of people I know on the Island who have already been impressed by Gloryhound and let them know about the show--I hope they get to it.

I have no idea whether the upcoming shows and CD had anything to do with how fired up the band sounded last night, but they did and it was a lot of fun to listen to.

    Set #2
  • Witch Doctor (Adam: guitar & vocals)
  • Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (Bob Dylan, Adam: guitar & vocals, Evan: drums, Shaun: keys)
  • "On my back"
  • Out Of Hiding
  • Flee the Scene
  • Bright In the Dark
  • I Wanna Be Your Dog (The Stooges--the song started as it usually does, with the big menacing riff, and then they pulled up and Dave started over, with some kind of a big fuzzy distorted effect on the riff. It was pretty cool.)
  • Don't Do It (The Band)
  • Before You Fall

  • Break

One of the songs played during the break between sets was "Born To Run," which reminded me of Danny Federici one more time and made me a little sad.

And then I was over by the stairs talking to Kathy when Dave came in from outside, looking hypothermic and horrified. "It's snowing!"

There is something wrong when you get a sunburn on Sunday and then by Thursday you're grateful you still have your winter tires on, is all I can say.

    Set #3
  • Voodoo Child (Jimi Hendrix, as a trio--Dave: vocals & guitar, Jeremy: bass, Shaun: drums)
  • Changes (Jimi Hendrix)
  • Powderfinger (Neil Young)
  • Meet Me In the Morning (Bob Dylan)
  • Call Me the Breeze (Lynyrd Skynyrd, which pulled all the people in the soft-seat area out onto the dance floor)
  • Who Do You Love (Bo Diddley)
  • I'm Going Home (Ten Years After)

  • I said good night and went outside, where the snow was still coming down and turning to sleet. Agreed with Shaun and Dave that there was no need of this nonsense.

But it's all right today, so I assume the trip to the Island will be no trouble. I hope, anyway. Because the Island is always a good idea.
